HK 91 – Parkerized and Cerakoted
Photos and information on the HK 91 with parkerization and cerakote

Utah Concealed Carry Instructor Michael Steck shares his thoughts about the HK 91 with a new parkerized and cerakoted finish.

It’s taken several hours and lots of help but I’m totally happy with the end result on this HK 91.  I picked this rifle up on a trade for a Sig Sauer that I hadn’t been shooting recently.  I became interested in the HK 91 when a friend recommended the rifle as a more economical semi-auto in 308 over the AR-10.  The rifle had an Urban Camo Duracoat job done to it but I didn’t much like it so I started the long process of removing the Duracoat.  Here’s the rifle before I removed the duracoat.

Thanks in large part to help from Blake with Denali Firearms, we were able to strip the duracoat with a sand blaster and then parkerize the rifle.  In the stripping, I started with Jasco Paint Remover – which did a pretty amazing job at taking most of the duracoat off.  There were some places that just wouldn’t come off.  I used gloves and everything and that Jasco stuff was harsh on the skin – so be careful!  Once we got the sandblaster up and running, things went pretty well.  Right after, we parkerized the rifle.  Neither of us realized that the receiver was stainless steel so here’s what we ended up with on the straight parkerized rifled. Here's what parkerizing doesn't do to a stainless steel receiver. I knew that I wasn’t going to use the old black furniture again so I started messing around with some Krylon Camo jobs…just for fun.

I ordered a set of Green Furniture from Cheaper Than Dirt as you can see in this next photo.  I wasn’t much pleased with the quality/look.  I think it’s okay.  Parkerizing with the HK 91I finally settled on a set of wood furniture that I think looks really sharp with this rifle.  It gives it a nice old school/vintage look that I just love. We finished off the rifle with a layer of cerakote and I’m very pleased with cerakote.  It was the air cure kind and it applied super easy.  Once again, thanks to Denali Firearms for the assistance here!  I have a rifle in duracoat and in cerakote and in my opinion, the Cerakote is a superior product.  Here’s a link to info about my duracoated AR in Urban Camo.
