Utah Concealed Carry Instructors in California
2 men get time in jail for falsifying gun permits
BOWLING GREEN — Two Wood County men who profited from issuing concealed weapon permits without requiring applicants to take the required training were sentenced Monday in Wood County Common Pleas Court.
Judge Reeve Kelsey ordered Jason Hernandez, 38, of Perrysburg Township to spend 45 days in the Wood County jail, pay a $2,000 fine, perform 200 hours of community service, and spend two years on community control. The judge sentenced Michael Davenport, 39, of Northwood to 30 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, 200 hours community service, and two years on community control. The men also were ordered to have no contact with each other. Both men pleaded guilty to complicity to falsification to obtain concealed handgun licenses, a fourth-degree felony. Prosecutors said that Hernandez, who was a certified instructor for the concealed-carry license, since 2004 issued some 110 false certificates in Lucas County and at least 22 in Wood County for individuals who did not take the 12 hours of instruction required by Ohio law. Davenport referred people to Hernandez.
Aram Ohanian, an assistant Wood County prosecutor, said the sheriff’s offices in Wood and Lucas counties revoked permits of people they were able to identify who got the permits from Hernandez without taking the class.
