Utah Legislature Seeks to Encourage CCW

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — The Utah legislature is considering a bill that is meant to encourage concealed carry in private businesses. Under Utah law, a private business can restrict those who carry concealed on their property by either posting a sign that firearms are prohibited or by informing their employees that carry a concealed firearm is not allowed. Traditionally, if someone where to come onto the private property, pull a firearm and injure someone, the private property owner could be held liable for the injury. Under H.B.380 a private employer would be held liable for the actions of one of its employees that pulls a firearm. The Text of the legislation reads as follows:

(1) Except as provided under Subsection (2), a private property owner, who knowingly
allows a person who has a permit to carry a concealed firearm under Section 53-5-704 to bring
the firearm onto the owner’s property, is not civilly or criminally liable for any damage or harm
resulting from the discharge of the firearm by the permit holder while on the owner’s property.
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply if the property owner solicits, requests, commands,
encourages, or intentionally aids the concealed firearm permit holder in discharging the firearm
while on the owner’s property.

Concealed Carry Instructor’s Review of the Marlin 795

So I just went to the desert to try out my new Marlin 795.  I picked this little guy up because I wanted the most accurate .22 for the money.  I know that I were to go with the Ruger 10/22, I’d end up spending as much on it as I did my sniper rifle.  Seemed sort of silly for just a .22.  Marlin has a rebate on this rifle for $25 off the original price…still waiting for that to show up in the mail.  First I needed to sight in the scope.  Just for kicks, I shot 10 rounds of Federal bulk pack.  Here’s the result at 25 yards.

Marlin 795 .22 LR Accuracy at 25 yards

Marlin 795 .22 LR Accuracy at 25 yards

I’m pretty sure that those two up top were more my mistake than the firearm’s problem.  I was just shooting off the bed rail on my truck.

I also brought some pennies that I had taped up on a cardboard target.  A friend said that the .22 probably wouldn’t punch a hole through the penny.  This is also at 25 yards.

Accuracy of the Marlin 795 .22 at a penny 25 yards away

The scope I selected is the Bushnell rimfire 3×9 for $30.  All in all, I’m rather happy with the accuracy of this rifle.  Several people have complained about the trigger pull.  I concur that it’s not nearly as nice as my Remington 700 out of the box.  There appear to be a lot of folks that have done an aftermarket trigger job on these guys…more to come on that.  What do you think?  Have you shot one of these?

UPDATE: Remington 700 SPS Tactical Accuracy and Review

I am so pleased with the performance of the SPS Tactical in .308 WIN (Remington 700 action). Just took to the desert to do a couple of shots. All at 100 yards and within one inch:

Another great feature about this Rifle is the Hogue stock! I wasn’t sure about the overmolded feel but I love it! It was so super cold out there and my rifle was comfortable to handle in the cold weather. Love this thing!

Natural Disaster and Emergency Preparedness

What gun would you take in a natural disaster?

What gun would you take in a natural disaster?

With the recent earthquake in Haiti, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I would do in a natural disaster.  What things would I need to survive?  How could I make it?  Would it be like Hurricane Katrina where Constitutional rights were violated and people had their firearms taken from them?  Would all lawlessness prevail even in the suburbs of Salt Lake City?

This post is about what I would do in a natural disaster situation.  I’m open to your suggestions but here’s what I’ve come up with for now.

I’ve got my 72 hour kits ready to go with food, water and all of the good little things we’re always told to have.  More specifically, I’m getting together a self-defense grab-n-go bag.  In the picture above, I’ve placed a few essential things that I’d grab in a quick hurry.  The green bags on the left contain my first aid kit.  So here’s what I’ve got in my little bag:

A box of .40 S&W HPs

50 rounds of .223

Lubricant

Flashlight

Extra batteries for my red dot

small cleaning rag

My Glock 22

AR-15 on the side

Any thoughts would be appreciated?  What are you planning on taking?

Remington 700 SPS Tactical Review

UPDATE
So I just added the Holland’s Tactical Bolt Handle and I totally love it! Here are some photos:

Original Post
Here’s the Remington 700 SPS Tactical at 100 yards. I’m working on compiling video of shots out to 400 yards.

So I’ve decided to enter the world of bolt action shooting.  As a starter gun, I’ve gone with the Remington 700 SPS Tactical with a Hogue over-molded stock.  I had a little bit of trouble getting this thing setup because I purchased the wrong height scope ring.  The folks over at Burris told me to go with the XTR low rings but it turns out that the bolt scraped the scope.  I did a little searching and found the same scope ring from Super Sniper for about $15 less.  So I went with those and after today’s time at the range, I’m not looking back.

The first two pictures are of my attempts to get three shots on top of each other. In the second photo, I was able to keyhole twice! All in all, I’m very pleased with this rifle. My gunsmith took the trigger down to 2.5 pounds and it shot super smooth. After I was satisfied that I had a good zero, I decided to shoot for the steel targets up the hill. I hit just about every target all the way up to 400 yards with out any problems. I was hitting the hostage scenario “bad guy” head at 400 yards as well. I couldn’t quite hit the 600 yard target because it was hard to see where my rounds were hitting with the snow. I definitely feel like a winner with this rifle. I should also mention that the scope is the Konus M30 4.5-16X40mm.

As a concealed carry holder, it’s understandable that in a self-defense situation your adrenaline will be racing and may get the better of you.

In this situation, it’s absolutely amazing that the clerk survives. Under the three self defense considerations above, do think it’s the best thing for the clerk to go chasing after the bad guys?
