Utah Concealed Carry Instructor Goes Shooting with the FBI

Recently I had the immense pleasure of participating in the FBI Citizen’s Academy. As a Utah Concealed Carry Instructor, I found myself amazed at all of the amazing things that the FBI is doing. The FBI mission ranges from protecting society from violent crime, going after bank robbers, looking for terrorists - both domestic and foreign, protecting society from Weapons of Mass Destruction. As a completion to our Citizen’s Academy, the FBI SWAT Team took us shooting up Parley’s canyon. Firearms present at the shooting day included the Glock 22 in .40 S&W, Sig Sauer P226 in 9mm, the M16 in 5.56mm, the HK MP5 in 10mm and the Thompson Machine gun in .45 ACP. Wow, what a fun shoot! Check out the M16 in full auto!

Traveling with firearms on a plane

So I’m on my way to teach the Utah concealed carry course in Illinois and I had an interesting experience with TSA. I am bringing four handguns with me to the class: kahr CW40, Sig p239 in .357 sig, Kel Tec p3at and my brand new STI Spartan in .45 ACP. All of my handguns were in a hard sided and locked case, just as TSA requires. I was told however that my single lock might be insufficient because the firearms are supposed to be totally beyond reach. Just thought that I would put that out there. You might consder putting two TSA locks on your rifle case or handgun case.

Gun Range Review of Doug’s Shooting Sports

So have you heard all of the advertising on the Radio recently about Doug’s Shoot’n Sports? They’ve been promising a huge stock of firearms and even offering free range use. I was fortunate to make it to Doug’s tonight on their last night of free range time. So I thought I would share my thoughts on the updated range downstairs at Doug’s. First a word about customer service at this Utah Gun Shop.

Doug's Shoot'n Sports - Utah Shooting Range and Gun Store

Customer Service:

Say what you will about customer service at Doug’s but I find that their sales people are knowledgeable, friendly and not too pushy - all of which are nice qualities for the guy behind the counter. I don’t know what it is but I hate waiting for someone to ask me if they can help me. I have walked out of several gun shops without buying a gun that I had intended to buy because no one asked if they could help me. It especially bothers me when I have to ask, “hey, when you get a sec, will you help me with this?” Well, that’s what happened tonight at Doug’s. Someone did finally come, and as I said before, they were nice and helpful.

The Range:

Now, for the review of the new gun range.  I have used the Utah Gun Range at Doug’s on several occasions.  The work they have done downstairs makes the place look a lot nicer.  Come to think of it, I bought my first handgun from Doug’s.  While the stairs going down to the range and in need of some work, they still serve their purpose.  One nice thing about the Gun Range at Doug’s is the large viewing/waiting area.  It’s still rather loud out here but you can at least teach a class or shoot the breeze while you wait.  Having this room is a nice feature.

Here is the waiting/viewing room downstairs at Dougs

Shooting Lanes:

Once you go inside the range area, there are several stations to select from (I think there were 8 lanes). The only problem I encountered when I got to my lane is that there weren’t any clips to hang my targets. Sure, I’ve shot a few clips on accident, but having some extras down there would have been nice. As you can see from the photos, there is a nice look to the range compared to what it used to be. I was also rather impressed that each of the target movers worked! Last time I went to Doug’s I think I had to move the target by hand. All in all, I had a rather enjoyable experience at the range.

Nice new look to the stalls at Doug's

I liked the walls between each of the lanes. The only downside to hard walls that I can I see is that it makes it a little hard for an instructor to see what the student is doing with their hands from an angle - probably not a concern for most folks though. Good work on the range Doug’s! I’ll be going back again. Next time, I hope I don’t have to stand at the glass counter for too long before I can handle some of the goods.

Dillon 650 reloader setup

I love reloading! I love it so much, that I thought I would share how I’ve got my Dillon 650 setup. I looked and looked and felt like I got the best deal for my money with the 650. I know it’s not the cheapest machine out there but you get a lot of features plus the amazing Dillon warranty. My good buddy has the 550 and he has loaded lots of rounds on his machine…it’s quite a workhorse. After loading several thousand rounds though, he wishes that he would have picked up at least the 650.

Dillon 650 Setup

Setup: It didn’t take too long to setup the machine right out of the box. The instructions from Dillon on the 650 are easy enough to follow. Later on I did have a small snag with the primer loading disc but Dillon customer service was only a phone call away. That’s another nice thing about going with a Dillon, they have great customer service!

The Auto Case Feeder: I didn’t realize when I first bought the 650 that the machine is truly designed to be used with the the automatic case feeder. That’s one area where the Dillon website could be improved. Maybe some video of how the machine is used and some of it’s different configurations. So I bought the case feeder and have loved it ever since. My buddy with the 550 has to load a case in each time. The case feeder loads new brass with each pull of the handle. In a later post, I show the machine in action. Right now, I’m in the middle of a caliber conversion. The Auto Case Feeder for the Dillon 650 The

Reloading bench and work space: I’m sort of in a small workspace (as you can see from the photo) and had to get rather creative to make everything fit in the 40+ inches width I had to work with. I built the entire bench with the light for $50. I got a couple of pieces of 2″x6″ and a board of MDF and used some old varnish that I had sitting around. Here’s how it all looked when I finished. Dillon 650 Reloading Bench

Organization:

As a very wise person said to me years ago, “organization is the key to success.” Having some type of, on-the-wall organization system has been crucial to my setup - especially given the small area I have to work with. If you didn’t already know this about reloading, but there are literally hundreds of small things that can magically disappear in the exact moment that you need them. It’s surprising how important one small piece can frustrate your entire reloading process. Here’s the organization pack I picked up from Harbor Freight, which I then placed on wall behind my bench. The Bench Drawer:

As I was building the bench, I realized that I could get just a little more space if I added a couple of hinges and cut the wood to form a drawer.

Drawer under the Bench top

I did the same thing on the bottom side as well. The drawer on the filled with brass (I think I bought too much) and the left side has bullets and primers.

Tool Heads:

Suffice it say for now that the tool head is what holds the dies in place (the half moon looking pieces).  I HIGHLY recommend that with each set of dies that you pick up, you should buy an additional tool head.  Since I didn’t really want the dies or the decapping pins to get damaged, I built this rather inexpensive PVC pipe tool head holder.

Step 2:

Utah Concealed Carry Courses now being offered in Illinois

I’m sure that you’ve heard all of the great news about how the number of Concealed Carry permit holders is on the rise.  This isn’t just great news for the gun industry, but it’s also great news that people are taking steps to protect themselves and their right to bear arms.  However, not all US citizens are offered the opportunity to conceal and carry a firearm in self-defense.  Take Illinois for example.  In the Northern part of the state you have Chicago, which has been dubbed the “murder capitol of the world.”  The enormous size, money, and power of Chicago means that the rest of the state is left to follow the megatropolis.  This is especially true when it comes to guns.  Notwithstanding the paramount Heller case, Chicago continues to deny its citizens the opportunity to lawfully own handguns.  To make matters worse, the Democratic super-majority has destroyed recent efforts to bring concealed carry to Illinois.

Recently, a proactive group of Illinois residents contacted MyUtahCCW.com about getting the Utah permit.  So I traveled out that way and taught a course.  Needless to say, I was totally impressed with how many people wanted to take advantage of getting the Utah Concealed Carry Permit.  These people want to conceal their firearm for self-defense as lawful citizens and I think their state should let them.  But for now, we’ll see about getting the Utah Concealed Firearm permit all over the state.
