The reason for carrying is to protect yourself and loved ones. A .22 is good for tin cans and small rodents.
My general carry gun is an XD-45. I use a verity of ammo manufactures but always a hollow point. I am partial to hydra-shok but Hornady makes some great loads too. I occasionally will carry a J frame S&W .357 or the wife's .38 special air weight depending on clothing or occasion.

Don't forget the Taurus PT145 Millennium. While not the best gun for an avid shooter, it packs a ten-shot mag, has a nice "big" feel for a smaller gun. For a self defense situation, it is a great little weapon.

I own Glocks, and .357 revolvers. I recently picked up a Kel-Tec PF-9 for daily conceal carry. Mostly I was interested in the thin-ness, as it increases carry options. I work in an office which would freak out if they knew an armed citizen was an employee. At the range I was actually surprised at how well the little pistol grouped. It points well and while a notch or two below my full sized Glock 17 in group size. It had very respectable accuracy for such a short barrel. At reasonable CC distances I was in the K zone every time. I have two improvements I'd recommend to Kel-Tec. #1 would be to square off and hatch the front of the trigger guard. In such a small weapon I prefer the stability boost I can get from the left hand index finger on the trigger guard. #2 I would offer an extended magazine that also adds length to the grip. I have size large hands, and would love the option to add an extra 1/2"-3/4" to the bottom of the grip. This would also increase capacity, which never hurts.

You are right, I stand corrected. The best CCW is the one that a user feels comfortable carrying and is effective using. I apoligize for getting carried away.

I took the Utah CCL permit class this past summer taught by Mike and it was very informative and profesionally ran. A group of us also wanted to obtain the Florida CCL permit. After the Utah class was completed we went to a local range and with Mike's supervision we all qualified for that permit too. It took less than 5 weeks to get both of my permits mailed to me. Thanks again Mike for running those great classes. I highly recommend anybody considering applying for either the Florida or Utah CCL permits take the classes taught by MyUtahCCL.

Whoa, don't jump off the deep end here! A 1911 is certainly practical to carry day in and day out. As always you need to find the right holster. I carry the all-stainless Colt Combat Commander very comfortably in a Tucker Gunleather Texas Heritage IWB holster. It is amazingly comfortable and concealable, and Tucker's "The Answer" is another good option. Most people have to experiment with several holsters to find one that's a perfect match, but it is very possible even for large pistols. I bought a Sig P238 for a "universal" carry piece for any and all situations. IMHO it is that, but with the Tucker holster the Colt is able to be comfortably carried 90% of the time. Plus the two pistols have the same manual of arms which is ideal. Its hard to justify carrying .380 when .45 is a comfortable and available option, but with both I feel I have a win-win situation.

I know..I know, everybody has an opinion, here is mine. The Ruger LCR (or any lightweight hammerless revolver) is the best concealed/carry because (1) they are easy to conceal/carry (2) easy to present and fire when micro-seconds count, remember altercations are most likely to occour within three feet of your person (3) the perp might grab the muzzle but the weapon in still firing. Alot of people are concerned about the five rounds that most revolvers hold, in my opinion if one of us is not incapacitated or running away after five rounds then neither of us should have been carrying a gun to start with. Yes, it would be great to have a 1911A1 .45 auto leveled when the situation arises but it's just not practical to carry day in and day out.

ETA; It's also a good idea to carry on the left front for a right hand draw in close quarters, this position also allows a possible left hand draw in a pinch.
